Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
